Seeds of Faith

By John Morris
If you buy a pack of seeds but don't plant them, then what good is it?

Mark 4:26

This is how it is with the kingdom of God; it is as if a man were to scatter seed on the land and would sleep and rise night and day and through it all the seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how.

The time and land where Jesus was from was agrarian, and those that he taught understood analogies regarding the land, planting, fishing and the like.  This is why Jesus taught in parables using these examples.  In gospel from Mark, Jesus talks about seeds.  He compares the Kingdom of God to wheat and grains, and to harvest at the right time.  He uses the example of a mustard seed, the smallest of all seeds, to grow into a large tree and produce great things.  If you buy a pack of seeds but don't plant them, then what good is it?  You are missing out on the beauty that can come from the seed and the fruit that can be produced.  Birds and smaller animals can flourish and grow because of the plants.  You and I are like seeds that God has planted.  There are billons of people on this earth and we are just one small seed.  How can we make a difference in this world?  But Jesus calls us to do just that.  We are to be good seed, to be planted in good soil so that we might grow to produce great fruit for others.  You might think that you are in difficult environment or situation, maybe at work, at home or socially.  Yet you are to bloom where you are planted.  If you allow the Holy Spirit to work for you in all situations, then others will come to not only trust you, but depend on you.  They will see Jesus through you in your actions.

As a parent or even a supervisor or mentor, you are called to also plant seeds.  As we raise our children, we do our best to take them to church and to teach them the faith.  In many cases, they may fight it, resist and may appear disinterested.  But, always remember that you are planting a seed.  Some seeds germinate right away, but for others, it might take years for the seeds to begin to grow.  Such is the case with our young people.  Like seeds, their faith may appear dead.  But don't give up.  Its important that we plant the seeds of faith for others, so that when the time is right, they may grow into the person God has called them to be.
