SENT OUT

By John Morris
Priortizing things can be difficult, but we need to keep things....

Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves. Luke 10:3

For 2000 years it has been a challenge to follow Christ. Our Lord told us that it would not be easy. It's the narrow road that will be hard to follow. We are told that we must carry our cross; that it will be easier to pass through a needle's eye than to get into heaven. It is a great challenge indeed. In Sunday's gospel, Saint Luke reminds us that Jesus sends out 72 to towns and villages he will be visiting and to prepare for his arrival. The 72 will be like lambs among wolves. It will not be easy. The road will be rife with dangers—mostly spiritual but some dangers physical—even giving of one's own life.

Our Lord gives instruction including not to carry many things, specifically no money, possessions or shoes. They are to strictly rely on the generosity of others through God's providence. He also says that they are to greet no one on their way. That part seems on the surface to be unfriendly or uncaring about the other travelers. It's easy to become distracted from our task at hand. We can lose focus on the purpose and mission for which we are called. If we become distracted on our faith journey, we may never attain the goal that was set before us. These might be innocent distractions but can grow into habits. Think about it….We are called to worship every day, but work, social activities, house and family things can get in the way. Priorities get mixed up. Sundays are supposed to be days of giving God his due…instead we have seen a decline in church attendance. People choose the beach, sporting events or family commitments—my son or daughter is on a travel squad and has games or practices on Sundays. Or I'm just too busy, but we'll go next week. Parents lead by example, and if that is not making a commitment to the faith, then the children will learn the same. The journey is not easy, but we must have the courage to say no to things of this world and say yes to our Lord.

Question for Reflection

How can I know when I'm off of God's path and on my own?

Holy Spirit, guide me to paths that are straight and that lead to you!
