Righteousness of St. Joseph

By Elvi J. Moya
What was true of Abraham whose belief in God's promise...

Matthew 1: 20

Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her.

What was true of Abraham whose belief in God's promise was credited to him as righteousness, what was true of Mary who is called "blessed among women" for believing the promise made to her by the angel Gabriel, is also true of Joseph who listened to and believed in God's word.

Benedict XVI points out to us that Joseph's act of divorcing quietly is inseparable from the Gospel mentioning that he was, "a righteous man". He links this characterization to Psalm 1: "Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the way of sinners, nor sit in company with scoffers. Rather, the law of the Lord is his joy; and on his law he meditates day and night." What begins as Joseph's desolation becomes his consolation - God's command became his source of joy!

The Lord yearns to make us a promise in which we can place our hope and trust so as to better follow him. But we must be persistent and consistent in silence, in prayer, day and night. Allow the Lord to speak to your most intimate concerns - you will be blessed. St. Joseph, pray for us!
