Matthew 23:3
Therefore, do and observe all things whatsoever they tell you, but do not follow their example. For they preach but they do not practice.
Sometimes it's hard to respect those above us when those people sometimes don't act trustworthy. However, Christ in today's readings reminds us how important it is to give respect to those who are above us. When a judge, police officer, government official or clergy member betrays our trust it hurts because they bear the an identity above the individual person. Christ challenges us to respect what people of authority stand for, for clergy it's God. we are called to challenge the wrong that people do but not the ideal they stand for, we are to uphold and protect that ideal from those that dirty it.
