Rejected

By Fr. Chuck Dornquast
A conversion can wreak havoc in family and friendships...

Mark 6:3

Is he not the carpenter? The Son of Mary...

A conversion can wreak havoc in family and friendships. In fact, it can even disrupt a family and their former sense of self. Phrases like... "you're not the same person" or "why can't we do what we've always done" or "I liked you better before" or even "do you think your better than me?" can weigh down a person and become great obstacles to their joy. When one person begins to follow Christ, it is unknown how those around them will react. I found when this dynamic played out in my own life a sense of doubt or uneasiness. "Did Jesus really want this for me?" Today's Gospel reminds us that we are not the first to experience this difficult reality—that long before you or I felt challenged, unaccepted or isolated from our communities, Jesus shouldered this cross. Because of the relationship Jesus has with His Father, His community took offense at Him. May we share our hearts with Christ when we feel alone and thus help Jesus to not feel so alone when He is rejected.
