Recommit Ourselves

By Zachary Brasseur
As we sit on the edge of a new year and a new decade...

John 1:3

"All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be."

As we sit on the edge of a new year and a new decade, it's important to take some time to look back and see how far we've come. Some of us can look at the past year with joy and enthusiasm, ready for a new adventure. Some of us had a really difficult year with loss and sadness, and it's hard to imagine what might come next. Whatever the case, in today's gospel, St. John puts things into perspective. Before there was anything that we can see, God was in charge and he continues to be in charge. In fact, nothing could get started without him! From the beginning, it was the will of the Father to create through his Son. Jesus is Lord, and when we put everything, our joy or sadness, gratitude or dread, in his hands we can share in his work of creation. The new year is just getting started and it offers us a chance to recommit ourselves to God's providence and become new creations in him.
