Ramblin' On

By John Morris
What should I say, how do I start, why do....

Matthew 6:7-8

In praying, do not babble like the pagans, who think that they will be heard because of their many words.  Do not be like them.  Your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

Picture this…you're at a big gathering, maybe a family reunion.  Lots of people there, some you know well, others not so much.  The leader of the group gathers everyone around and says to you publicly, "Would you be kind enough to lead us in prayer?"  Immediately you get nervous. The person next to you has suddenly grabbed your hand.  You quickly glance around the room, making eye contact with a couple of people…they smile and nod, and might think, "glad it wasn't me!" In the few seconds of awkward silence, you're thinking, "what should I say, how do I start, why me?"  Then you start in.  You're trying to think of the right 'formula', the right words, waxing eloquently to God and yet stumbling to wrap it up.  When the 'Amen' comes, everyone smiles and a some might say, "nice job."  Then you grade yourself.

Praying to your self is really no big deal for most people.  But to extemporaneously pray in front of a group or with just one other person...that can be intimidating.  The best prayers are the ones that come from the heart.  Everyone knows that you're doing your best.  Just pause, ask the Holy Spirit to speak through you, and just speak.  Maybe it's the Lord's Prayer (which immediately follows the scripture passage), maybe it's something else.  But make sure it comes from the heart.  Remember that all prayers are answered, it's just that sometimes it may not be the answer you want, but instead what is the will of God the Father.  Always remember that when two or more are gathered, Jesus is with you.  Just speak to him.
