RICH SOIL

By John Morris
Do you analyze the ground before you plant flowers?

But some seed fell on rich soil, and produced fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.  Matthew 13:8

How often do you go to the beach and see a garden planted in the sand?  I've never seen it and I don't know that you can have a harvest of much in that soil.  So why waste time trying to grow it?  Today's parable finds Jesus talking about planting to create a harvest.  He explains that seed will not grow on rocks as the birds will eat it and it cannot root.  A good harvest can't grow in thorny or weedy areas as it will become choked off.  It can only grow in fertile or areas open to growth.  Likewise as Christians, we have to be open to growth, and be aware of areas that we can help others grow.  If a farmer has land with rocks, he works to move the rocks to make the soil productive.  If it's thorny or full of weeds, he clears the land to make it fertile for the right seeds.  We must make sure we prepare the soil of our faith so that we can bring others to Christ.  If we just rush in, we will not be successful. It takes time to prep the evangelistic landscape so that we can have a bountiful harvest for Christ!

Question for Reflection

What can I do to prepare myself to bring others to a life in Christ?

Lord, help me to be gentle but strong in my efforts to bring my friends to a greater life with you!
