Proclaiming the Word of God Requires More Than Talk

By Char Lerch
Have you ever heard the saying "walk the talk"...

"The word of God continued to spread, and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem increased greatly." - Acts 6:7

Have you ever heard the saying "walk the talk"? Well, today's first reading explains what that means perfectly. It shows what we can accomplish when we work together. The apostles did not sit back and theorize about inequities; they got involved.

There was a problem in the community and the leaders came together to solve the problem. It reminds me a lot of the work we are doing for justice. Nativity Parish is one of 25 churches in Hillsborough County that belong to an organization called HOPE. It stands for Hillsborough Organization for Progress and Equality. We work together to solve the problems in our community that affect our children, our families, our elders and those often forgotten. We do this by proclaiming the word of God and standing up for what is right and just. On our own, we could never have accomplished the improvements we have seen in our county. But when we stand firm on the Word of God and work together, God can help us be more effective in both our personal lives and in our community.

Is the Lord calling you to "walk the talk" by becoming more involved in your church community?

Lord, help me to be a disciple who proclaims Your Word in both what I say and do. Amen
