Pencil Sharpeners

By Fr. Connor Penn
Remember those old school pencil sharpeners, the ones nailed up to the wall in your elementary school classroom?

"Indeed, the word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword..."

Hebrews 4:12

Remember those old school pencil sharpeners, the ones nailed up to the wall in your elementary school classroom? There was something so satisfying about turning the crank with one's hands and feeling the pencil within growing in sharpness.  The author of our Second Reading at Mass today talks about something sharp; he describes the Word of God as sharper than any two-edged sword.  If you're like me, at times the stories we hear in Scripture lose their sharpness. I can catch myself saying, "Ah, I've heard this one already. I know how it ends!" But God's invitation to us this Sunday is, like a pencil sharpener, to allow His word to be re-sharpened so that it strikes us anew.

How can I allow the Word of God to strike me anew in the coming week?

Jesus, thank you for communicating yourself to us through the Scriptures.
