Parables and Sayings

By John Morris
The sweet taste of revenge may not be...

Luke 6:29

To the person who strikes you on one cheek, offer the other one as well, and from the person who takes your cloak, do not withhold even your tunic.

When someone disrespects you, violates your trust, or even goes out of their way to do you an injustice, it is natural to want to strike back.  You might have even done that in very overt ways or maybe even in something subtle.  But you got your revenge.   How did you feel about that once you took your revenge on them?  Did you feel good about it, or was there something inside of you that made you feel guilty?  There are many phrases that go with this.  "They got what they deserved." "What comes around goes around." "Snitches get stitches."   There are many others. But the reality is, we are to let it go.  Revenge can escalate quickly into areas that become destructive emotionally, physically and even spiritually.  Every man is a sinner.  There's nothing we can do about it except ask for forgiveness and try to do better.  The devil knows this and wants to tempt you to do something to harm the person who did harm to you.  "Two wrongs don't make a right." Jesus instructs us to go against that feeling of anger, resentment, or evil thought.  He tells us to "turn the other cheek."  It's hard to do, but we are called to be witnesses for good, to be ambassadors for Christ.  So instead of exacting your revenge, you should live the example to, "take the high road."  "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
