Owning Up to Ignorance

By Fr. Chuck Dornquast
Sometimes "I don't know" is the best answer...

Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples."

Luke 11:1

Sometimes "I don't know" is the best answer. The disciples witnessed Jesus at prayer. They witnessed the fruits of Jesus' relationship with the Father. This could have caused a decent bit of self-awareness and curiosity in them. "When I pray, it doesn't look like that. I wonder how He prays." Before His prayer life, the disciples responded, "I don't know, but I want to." As the disciples asked the Lord to teach them how to pray they owned up to their own lack or ignorance in prayer. It certainly takes courage to own up to our lacks, especially in something as important as prayer. However, I encourage you to approach the Lord with the same disposition as the disciples and ask Him to teach you how to pray before the Father. Own up to your ignorance and say to Him, "I don't know how to pray as you do, but I want to."

What other areas of my life might I own up to my need for growth and ask for the Lord's grace?

Jesus, teach me how to pray today.
