Opting for the desert

By Fr. Chuck Dornquast
Dude had the most important job in human history. His work was the redemption of all of humanity...

At daybreak, Jesus left and went to a deserted place. The crowds went looking for him, and when they came to him, they tried to prevent him from leaving them.43But he said to them, "To the other towns also I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God because for this purpose I have been sent."   Lk. 4:42-43

Jesus had the most important job in human history. His work was the redemption of all of humanity. His work truly had eternal ramifications. He was literally capable of healing people, expelling demons, and raising them from the dead. Talk about an incredible résumé and having skills that were in high demand. So I must admit to being startled at how often Jesus went to a deserted place. Prayer, solitude, alone-time, silence appear to have been essential for Jesus. Frequent times of nothingness and getting away from busyness are shown to be key for how humans are meant to live. Should we like to be more like Jesus, let us opt for the desert more like Jesus too.

How might I spend more quality time in prayer today?

Jesus, help me to join you in the deserted place.
