Only Say the Word

By Spencer Grant
How incredible it is that one of the figures who had such an incredible impact on Christ...

“Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof; only say the word and my servant will be healed."

Matthew 8:8

How incredible it is that one of the figures who had such an incredible impact on Christ and his Apostles to the extent that we include his words every day in our liturgy was in fact a Centurion—a Gentile. Of all the learned and holy men that Christ came into contact with, in none of them did he find such profound faith.

“Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof; but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.” We say this just before communion each day; just before we “climb the LORD’s mountain” or “go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.” Before we encounter Christ in the Eucharistic Feast, we are reminded of the example of faith that the centurion provides. With the utmost humility, understanding the awesome power that lies behind the simple appearance of the sacrament, we place complete trust and confidence in Christ’s supreme authority to make us clean and unite himself to us.

How can I, in reflecting upon the true nature of the Eucharist, place my trust in Christ with total humility?

Lord, we are not worthy of your great love and mercy, yet you offer it to us freely despite this. Help us to trust in you and to receive you in loving humility.

Spencer Grant is currently in his Senior year at St. John Vianney College Seminary in Miami, Florida. He was born and raised in Tampa (or as he says Champa) and has been a parishioner at St. Timothy Parish in Lutz since he was eleven years old when his family joined the Church. When not busy with studies, Spencer can often be seen on the golf course or watching the Bucs, Lightning, or Rays (you know, winning teams) as he has been since childhood. Please continue to keep him in your prayers as he continues his discernment towards priesthood.
