Not a Gospel of Prosperity

By Fr. Chuck Dornquast
Follow Jesus and your life will get easier, you'll have less difficulties and nicer things.

We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. For those he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.

Romans 8:28-29

Follow Jesus and your life will get easier, you’ll have less difficulties and nicer things. That is not the good news of Christ. That is a type of preaching which is called “the gospel of prosperity.” Paul in his letter to the Romans is not preaching a gospel of prosperity. He is not saying that if you go to church and say your prayers then nothing bad will happen. Rather he instructs that loving God will conform us to the image of the Son of God…who was crucified…but rose again.

Truly a relationship with the living God, going to mass and regularly praying the scriptures doesn’t transform the world around us, it transforms the world within us. May we be confident that should we actively practice love for God, that God will conform our hearts into greater union with His.

How can I practice greater love for God today?

Father, I surrender my heart to yours.
