Not Amazon

By Fr. Chuck Dornquast
A danger in a consumer based world view is that the affect of the other is forgotten...

But Zion said, “The LORD has forsaken me; my Lord has forgotten me.” Can a mother forget her infant, be without tenderness for the child of her womb? Even should she forget, I will never forget you.

Is. 49: 14-15

A danger in a consumer based world view is that the affect of the other is forgotten. Rather than relationships occurring between two distinct and feeling human beings, a relationship occurs between a provider and a consumer. In that dynamic there is little to no affect beyond “want.” All the more dangerous is this dynamic when we attempt to relate to God according to this consumer paradigm. God is the great “amazon” in the sky who exists to provide my needs and wants. Should you find yourself struggling with a superficial or consumer relationship with God, then I invite you to meditate on this passage from Isaiah.

Do I treat God like a consumer?

Lord, what is your affect towards me?
