Mt. 1:20
"Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid."
Becoming a Father was an intimidating moment. At the age of 26 people would know me as "Father" for the rest of my life. By no means was I holy enough, smart enough and even after 9 years was I prepared enough. What I did have from that first moment of becoming Father was the promise the Lord was making to me. That He would provide. Joseph in today's Gospel is being entrusted with the unique task of loving the Virgin Mary and raising the Son of God. Talk about "no pressure." Yet I find it interesting that Joseph is not given and instruction manual, a "how-to guide on parenting", nor even foreknowledge of all that would come. What Joseph had was a relationship with His God—Joseph let God be God of his own life and his family. May you and I ask for the trust of St. Joseph.
