Never Tired of Forgiving

By Mark DeSio
In today's Gospel, Jesus warns us about the unforgivable sin...

Mark 3:29

"But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an everlasting sin."

In today's Gospel, Jesus warns us about the unforgivable sin: blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. What exactly is this sin? And why is it so serious? To blaspheme against the Holy Spirit is to refuse God's mercy. The Lord knows us more than we know ourselves and loves us more than we love ourselves. He loves us so much that he has given us free will, a gift that he will never violate.

In paragraph 1864, the Catechism states: "Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven." There are no limits to the mercy of God, but anyone who deliberately refuses to accept his mercy by repenting, rejects the forgiveness of his sins and the salvation offered by the Holy Spirit. Such hardness of heart can lead to final impenitence and eternal loss (CCC 1864).

Therefore, let us repent of our sins and trust in the Lord's Divine Mercy. As Pope Francis once said,  "God never tires of forgiving us; we are the ones who tire of seeking his mercy."
