NEW BALANCE

By John Morris
Do you take time to listen to God, or just work for God?

The Lord said to her in reply, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things.  There is need of only one thing.  Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her."  Luke 10:41-42

There are many hard working, faith-filled people who give much of their time for many worthy causes.  They volunteer at the parish, prison or food pantry.  These are all noble works of which God would be pleased.  There are others who spend time in contemplation and prayer.  These are the parishioners who spend time at Eucharistic adoration, who lead the rosary prayers at church and quietly go about their business praying for the world.  God will be pleased with this group as well.

Today's gospel from Saint Luke finds Jesus with Martha and her sister Mary.  Scripture tells us that Martha was a hard worker, making sure that everyone was taken care of and generally being what we'd call a good hostess.  Meanwhile her sister Mary was at the feet of Jesus, taking in every word Jesus said.

The faithful I spoke of a moment ago are like Mary and Martha, and both are necessary for the church.  You have those that see a problem or issue in the church or community, and give their time and talent to help remedy the situation.  You have others who see the same problem and will fervently pray that the issue or problem comes to a resolution fit for the will of God.  All of us need to do our part for the kingdom of God on earth.  We need to find a healthy balance of work and prayer.  We cannot have the work distract us from growing in faith and love of God.  At the same time, we cannot become so focused in our piousness that we ignore the situations that require hands-on attention.

Question for Reflection

Do I work so hard for the church that I feel burned out?

God, help me find balance in my life, so that I have the courage to step out of my comfort zone and take you to a deeper prayer life while serving others in his name.
