Luke 10: 41-42
The Lord said to her in reply, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her."
How many people go into a frenzy when guests come over, making sure the house is clean and there's enough food to serve. Martha is kind of like this in the Gospel today. She receives the Lord into her home. He's sitting and chatting with the people there, but she is not aware of what he's saying. Imagine what a missed opportunity to have the God of the universe in your living room, sharing his heart with you, and you are preoccupied with the smudge you see on the table, or whether the food is too cold. Martha is worried about how the small housekeeping details are going to reflect on her. Mary on the other hand, has forgotten about herself because she has been drawn out of herself by this man who is speaking as no man she ever heard. She did nothing but pay attention to the Mystery before her. She recognizes in Christ's word a correspondence to her deepest desires. As she listens to the truth he is speaking, she becomes more free. Free to love and serve without feeling burdened, or doing it because she has to. Christ's love frees us and must be the starting place for all our actions.
