Messiness Within

By Andrew Zsebedics
When I was younger, one day, I was over at my relative's house for a family party...

Mark 7:6

He responded, "Well did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written:

'This people honors me with their lips,

but their hearts are far from me...'

When I was younger, one day, I was over at my relative's house for a family party. Well, my relative had a blackberry bush and we loved picking them and eating them. When it was time to eat dinner, we go running inside and I get stopped. Wondering why I was stopped by an adult, I looked at my hands and realized I was immersed in blackberries. Running inside I realized my messiness.

Relating this experience to today's Gospel, Jesus shares his heart thirsting for the ones' whose hearts were far from him, and as a kid I was messy and I didn't realize it until I ventured inside. I was invited even in my messiness and I was asked to look at myself and see where I needed to be cleansed. The Lord calls us wherever we are in life, whether far from Him or near, happy or sad, messy or clean; the Lord invites us into our own hearts to see what needs to be cleansed in order that our hearts may not only become closer to Jesus, but also be transformed into his own heart. When we run inside to our hearts, and find the messiness within, we can hand over all of it to the Lord, who so desires to help.
