Mafia and Motives

By John Morris
They are all looking to turn a profit no matter...

Luke 9:25

What profit is there for one to gain the whole world yet lose or forfeit himself?

I must admit that some of my favorite movies and tv shows are gangster-related. These include The Godfather series, Scarface, Goodfellas and The Sopranos. It's a guilty pleasure, I know. They clearly show the sinful nature of the lead characters and how they drag into the pit of sin all of those people around them, even their loved ones. In all of these, the lead characters have a streak of greed in them. They are all looking to turn a profit quickly, no matter who they hurt along the way and no matter the ethical or moral consequences. They pervert the truth and twist the facts to justify their actions. It was only in the third Godfather sequel that Michael Corleone came to grips with his sinful life, yet couldn't completely separate himself from the life of sin.

We have two choices in this life: to accept God and Jesus Christ, or to turn and walk away as in the parable of the rich young man. By accepting the Christian life, and living the best you can asking for forgiveness when you stumble, then you have the promise of eternal life. By walking away, you accept all that the world gives you, but your eternal life is severely compromised. Why gain the riches of this life, yet forfeit your eternal soul? The pressures of this world are tremendous in themselves and can destroy a person. Pray today for the strength to walk away from the earthly treasures and pleasures and walk instead with God this Lent.
