When he became aware of this he said to them,
"Why do you conclude that it is because you have no bread?
Do you not yet understand or comprehend?
Are your hearts hardened?
"God is not a lucky rabbit's foot," an old priest once told my class in middle school. Luck comes and goes, and being dealt a good hand during one game of poker doesn't mean you ought to wager your life savings on the next. We cannot trust in luck, but we can trust in God.
When I entered the seminary, I had plenty of fears and concerns, from deep worries about loneliness to practical fears about not being alone enough--would I be robbed of all privacy by an annoying roommate? Not as luck would have it, but as God would have it, those concerns turned out to be over nothing. The Lord blessed me with both ample companionship and privacy. Yet there is always something new to fret over.
It's a wonder how easily past blessings are forgotten when new challenges arise! If God has given us the grace to overcome hardships in the past, why assume he will not do so again? Are we steadfastly trusting in God, or are we treating Him like a lucky rabbit's foot that may or may not bring us fortune today?
