Little girl, I say to you, arise!

By Francesca
I hear this phrase a lot, "Talitha Koum..."

“He took the child by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise!” Mark 5:41

I hear this phrase a lot, “Talitha Koum.” Sometimes I’ve caught myself flippantly saying this in my head when waking up in the morning… “Little girl… wake up and get out of your bed, arise!” but there is a much deeper meaning behind these words spoken by Christ himself.

This moment is a major plot point in Jesus’ ministry. Part of the Gospel leading up to it has people telling the little girl’s father that “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?”

Jesus never gave up that quickly. He told the father that she is “not dead but asleep.” One of the songs we play at Spirit FM called Graves into Gardens says “You turn graves into gardens… You turn mourning to dancing, You give beauty for ashes, You’re the only One who can.” Jesus is the only One who can turn mourning into dancing, because as children of God we are called to life! We’re called to arise!

Have you been sleeping? How can you wake up to live in the glory of Christ today?

Jesus, thanks for waking us up. Help us to live more fully with you in the land of the living today.
