Leaving breadcrumbs

By Fr. Chuck Dornquast
I thought that leaving breadcrumbs was the most reasonable thing in the world...

Be doers of the word and not hearers only, deluding yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his own face in a mirror. He sees himself, then goes off and promptly forgets what he looked like. But the one who peers into the perfect law* of freedom and perseveres, and is not a hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, such a one shall be blessed in what he does.

James 1: 22-25

I thought that leaving breadcrumbs was the most reasonable thing in the world. After having read the children’s version of “Hansel and Gretel,” I was positive as a child that anyone who didn’t leave breadcrumbs was foolish. Breadcrumbs for me was a tool of knowing where you had come from and the direction in which you were going. They ultimately are a tool of memory.

How important memory is for those who want to follow Jesus. How important to remember deeply the moments when we became aware of the Father’s embrace. How imperative it is to hold fast to the conviction of holiness and service which arose from those moments.

Although not breadcrumbs, we do have tools for remembering these realities in our lives. This is why we use a journal in prayer, why we mark up our bibles with notes, why we use a particular rosary, why we have pictures of the sacraments we’ve received. When we place an image of Jesus prominently in our home or perhaps a statue in front of our house these are tools of remembering who we are before the Lord. They remind us of our true home in the heavenly realms and hopefully, they help lead us back there.

What are significant moments in my relationship with the Lord?

Holy Spirit, give me the grace to remember your work in my life this day.
