Open up a newspaper on any given day and you're likely to find some story, maybe several, about someone in a powerful position abusing their authority. This is not only a failure in leadership but can shatter people's faith in whole institutions. I imagine that's because we are too focused on developing skills not focused enough on cultivating hearts that long to serve. In terms of authority, Jesus' was ultimate. He was God. However, He didn't use that power for His own gain and instead chose to provide for us the ultimate example of effective leadership. Giving all for the ones He'd been called to serve, He gave us a model to follow and showed us that power is not a tool to build ourselves up but to build others up.
