Just Listen

By Fr. Lucius Amarillas, OSB
Today's first reading is appropriate for this sacred season of Lent...

"This is the nation that does not listen to the voice of the LORD"

Jeremiah 7:28

Today's first reading is appropriate for this sacred season of Lent. Specifically, the prophet Jeremiah challenges his audience to put the Lord's commands before themselves and their preferences. Jeremiah's message to his original audience remains relevant today, in that the Lord's message was not merely a condemnation,  but indeed a plea for His chosen ones to return to Him. Such a restoration begins with listening to what God is asking of us.  In our society, it seems the loudest one wins. Our Christian lifestyle is such a contradiction to the world's standards, that if we hope to get closer to God, it seems He needs us to shut up and listen up! By seeking to have our way or the last word, we not only alienate ourselves from our brethren, but indeed build a barrier between the Father who seeks us, who reaches out to us daily through His Word.

Today, before we decide to speak up or command anyone to attend to us, why not stop and listen to what God needs, and how He calls us back to Him?

"My Lord and my God, help me listen before I demand to be listened to."
