Jesus, Our Model

By Sister Dolores Wehle
Today is Holy Thursday, the first evening of the Sacred Triduum...

“If I,therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another’s feet. I have given you a model to follow me. So that as I have done for you, you should also do”

John 13: 14-15

Today is Holy Thursday, the first evening of the Sacred Triduum. One would expect  todays’s Gospel to tell the institution of the Eucharist. While we do hear a wonderful account of it in the Second Reading( 1Cor 11:23-26) the Gospel recalls the Washing of the feet of the disciples. Jesus rose from the table, took off his outer garments, tied a towel around his waist and with basin and water began to wash the feet of his disciples. Yes, there were complaints but Jesus quieted them with “Unless I wash you, you will have no inheritance with me.” No one wanted to risk that. Back at the table again,Jesus explained why He did it. “If I therefore, the Master and teacher have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another’s feet. I have given you a model to follow, so that what I have done for you, you should also do.” As I reflected on this account , I heard echoes of what Jesus had said to his disciples many times before: Love one another as I have loved you. … Forgive those who who hurt  you …Feed the hungry …Follow me… I have given you a model.

When and how have you been aware that Jesus IS your model?

Jesus, our Model, be with me as I strive to imitate You today.
