If He is God...

By Fr. Chuck Dornquast
If Jesus is God, then that is a really big deal...

When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi* he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist,* others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

Mt. 16:13-16 From the readings for the Memorial of St. Leo the Great, Pope and Doctor of the Church

If Jesus is God, then that is a really big deal. It means that I must engage with His words, actions, and teachings in a very different way. The council of Chalcedon in 451 was a pivotal moment in how we understand who Jesus is. Pope St. Leo the Great (who also turned back Attila the Hun from Rome) lead the church through this period and provided us a firm rock to depend upon. Do yourself a favor and take a moment to search for the “Creed of Chalcedon.”

Jesus, help me to better understand my faith.

Do I believe that Jesus is fully man and fully God as our faith professes?
