INTERIOR PAIN

By John Morris
Peer pressure can manipulate your beliefs and cause....

Even so, on the outside you appear righteous, but inside you are filled with hypocrisy and evildoing.  Matthew 23:28

I try to be a good person each day.  I strive to keep the Golden Rule, I try to be a good example for my co-workers, and I generally give kindness to all. But there are times when I slip, when I get lazy and self-centered, doing only what I want to do.  When someone is overly nice to me, I sometimes (erroneously) think, "I wonder what they want from me?"  Sometimes it's, "What's in it for me?"  Peer pressure also plays into this. Whether it's in business or especially with kids, we can put up a false front in order to fit in or conform.  By doing this we might end up compromising our morals and beliefs.  Part of that thinking comes from experience and motives that I have had in past dealings with others.   It's one thing to be cautious; it's another to be hypocritical or scheming.  We see it in families, in business and in politics.  We unfortunately see it in church too.  When we think this way, we live a lie and it can cause spiritual pain.

Today's gospel finds Jesus rebuking the Pharisees in their actions.  He calls them out as being hypocrites. They dress in their flowing ceremonial robes, live in nice houses, and have what they need, yet are critical of others.  Jesus tells us that those with much responsibility, much will be expected.  If we are being hypocrites and plotting to serve our own good vs. that of others, then we will be held accountable on the last day.

Question for Reflection

What is one thing I can do today for others with no beneficial motives for myself?

Lord Jesus, help me to be true to myself instead of trying to manipulate or impress others.
