His hurting heart

By Fr. Chuck Dornquast
A few years ago I was caught on camera consoling a particular field goal kicker after missing a few field goals...

Isaiah 50:4-6

The Lord GOD has given me

a well-trained tongue,

That I might know how to answer the weary

a word that will waken them.

Morning after morning

he wakens my ear to hear as disciples do;

The Lord GOD opened my ear;

I did not refuse,

did not turn away.

I gave my back to those who beat me,

my cheeks to those who tore out my beard;

My face I did not hide

from insults and spitting.

A few years ago I was caught on camera consoling a particular field goal kicker after missing a few field goals. The reason I drew near to that kicker was because of the words being hurled at him from the "fans" in the stands. Something impelled me to draw near to that man who was being rejected. Hopefully this is something that any of us would do. As we approach the events of Holy Week, as the rejection of Jesus reaches it's summit—I wonder if we might draw near to His hurting heart? I wonder if we might say to the Lord, "Jesus, I don't want you to be alone in your hurt so I'll be with you."
