HATE IS AN UGLY WORD

By John Morris
Telling someone you hate them is °..

"If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple."  Luke 14:26

Have you ever been so angry with a loved one, that you cry out, "I hate you!"? Sometimes we hear this from kids and teenagers, but it can also get into adulthood.  Hate is a strong word, and should not be taken lightly.  Yet in today's gospel, Jesus uses this very word when speaking about parents and relatives.  Saint Luke's gospel says, "if anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, even his own life, cannot be my disciple."  This seems counter to the commandment, honor your father and mother.  The lesson in this part of the gospel is to not let anyone or anything keep you from Christ.  Generally that would not be the case, but for some families it might be.  Parents are very influential and even little habits can seep into everyday life that can keep the kids from growing in love with God and the Church.  Maybe the parent is critical of the church itself and this verbal criticism can shape opinions and influence those listening.  We should always keep in mind the verse, "let the little ones come to me."

Jesus also reminds us that not only parents but possessions can keep us him.  We can become so obsessed with things that we miss church.  It's a beautiful day, so let's skip church and go on the boat.  Let go to the beach instead of church.  I have to work this Sunday to earn my keep, so I simply cannot participate in church activities.  All of these thoughts and more have probably crept in at some point.  Don't let money, possession or even people keep you from your place with Jesus.  Freedom from attachments of this world will provide you with a deeper encounter with Christ.

Question for Reflection

What things can I let go of in order to have a deeper encounter and personal relationship with Jesus?

Lord, help me to place all worldly things aside so that I might have a greater encounter with you!
