God is not a People Pleaser

By Katie Holland
I don’t like it when people don’t like me...

"If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first."

John 15:18

I don’t like it when people don’t like me.  I am not afraid to speak truth when necessary, but personally, I am much more of a fan of affirmation and I like to steer clear of condemnation by others.  Today’s Gospel is calling me out (and anyone like me).   My number one focus should be to do His will, regardless of what is the cost.  The Lord gives us a big clue as to what will be the cost; hatred by the World.  Jesus offers us some comfort by reminding us that he asks nothing of us, that he is not willing to endure himself.  If they hate us, they hated him first.   From the time Jesus was conceived he was hated. First by those that rejected his mother’s virgin pregnancy, then by Herod who tried to have him killed as a baby, and finally by his own people who had him crucified.   Following Jesus means I share in his rejection; witnessing to His love means that I must stand for His justice. Standing up for truth will infuriate those who live by the lies this world offers.  This does not mean that we should go looking to cause trouble, but when trouble comes, help me Lord not to run away.

Am I prepared to stand for God's Truth, even if the costs me favor with the world?

Jesus, give me courage to follow your will for my life, Give me the strength to speak your truth, to stand for your justice and to witness your love to this world.
