God Only Gives Blessings

By Deacon Drew Woodke
In today's Gospel, Jesus confronts the world view of some Jewish sects...

John 8:51

Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever keeps my word will never see death

In today's Gospel, Jesus confronts the world view of some Jewish sects, that there was no afterlife, and that God only gives us his blessings in this life. "Whoever keeps my word will never see death." And that can be hard to wrestle with. If I'm not feeling blessed now, what is this all for? Why bother living a good life if it all seems to fall apart in front of me? Today the whole world is crying out together in the midst of this pandemic, some more so than others. Amidst all of this we may be led to feel inadequate or isolated. We may have some feelings of doubts or despair. But if Jesus Christ is Lord, and His words are true, then He can change our feelings of inadequacy to courage; isolation to communion; doubt to faith; despair to hope. All we have to do is invite him into our lives. You may not feel there is much to be thankful for in these troubling times, but the Lord wants to be with us in these times of uncertainty, and He wants us to trust that as we remain steadfast to his word, our reward will be eternal life.
