Give Us This Bread, Always

By Mark DeSio
I'm in my fourth year of seminary and since day one...

John 6:34

"Lord, give us this bread always."

I'm in my fourth year of seminary and since day one, the celebration of Mass and the reception of the Holy Eucharist has been a central part of my day and life as a seminarian. Jesus is unfathomably generous to his church. We have the opportunity to receive him every single day. To receive the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus Christ is an incredible gift. Still, sometimes I find myself falling into routine, as I am sure many of us do. One gets used to abiding in the Lord. We get comfortable in God's mercy, and soon enough, the Bread of Life becomes more and more familiar to us, becoming just another aspect of the ordinary. With the breakout of COVID-19 and the restraint on receiving Jesus in the Eucharist, I have come to realize how much I truly need Jesus Christ. We all need his presence in the Blessed Sacrament, and his dwelling in the tabernacle of our hearts by receiving the Holy Eucharist. When we realize the humility and mercy of the Lord in his gift of the Blessed Sacrament, then we can truly pray in the depths of our hearts, "Lord, give us this bread always."
