2 Maccabees 7:22
I do not know how you came into existence in my womb; it was not I who gave you the breath of life, nor was it I who set in order the elements of which each of you is composed.
The first time I was able to hold a new-born child I marveled at the creature before me. There was so much with this new life that I recognized was beyond my own understanding. Reflecting on this child's future and everything which this new life would experience led me to awe and gratitude. The mother in this passage from Maccabees reminds us of the gift of life which we are entrusted with. This brings me peace in knowing that each human life first comes from God—so that I don't have to try and be God for each person I encounter. May you and I have the confidence to truly entrust ourselves and those we Love to the God who created us.
