Foundation of Love

By Fr. Chuck Dornquast
Volatility, that is one way that I would describe contemporary conversations...

James 1:19-20

Everyone should be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath. For the wrath of a man does not accomplish the righteousness of God.

Volatility, that is one way that I would describe contemporary conversations. It appears to be one explosive encounter to the next. The angriest voice or the latest angry voice is the winner. This is not a critique of contemporary culture, for that is it's own realm. Rather it is a question that I must examine within myself and my relationships—do I allow anger to be a motivator for how I speak or what I believe? The letter of James is clear that "everyone should be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to wrath." While there are clearly examples of Jesus Himself becoming indignant—it was never His foundation. Rather, His foundation was in the Love of His Father, in the confidence He had in the Father's providence. Should we like to be less angry in our driving, our conversations, our interactions, our perspectives, our difficulties—I invite you to abandon yourself more regularly into your Father's arms, share with Him your hurts, and learn to be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to wrath.
