Forgive as We've been Forgiven

By Fr. Drew Woodke
In today’s Gospel Jesus delivers what is known today as the "Our Father" prayer...

“Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.”

Matthew 6:12

In today’s Gospel Jesus delivers what is known today as the “Our Father” prayer. This is given after his disciples ask him how to pray. This is quite easily the most known prayer in the world, even among non-Christians.  Even though we may pray this prayer on a weekly basis, or even a daily basis, we may not be aware of the magnitude of the words in which we are praying.

I would like to highlight just the ending: “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespassed against us.” I would also like to highlight that immediately following the prayer Jesus emphasizes again, “if you forgive men their transgressions, your heavenly father will forgive you. But if you do not forgive men, neither will your father forgive your transgressions.”

These are heavy words. Are there people in our lives that we have neglected to forgive? Are there people in our lives who we resent or even harbor anger and hatred against? Jesus desires to give us his healing, mercy, and forgiveness. But he also challenges us to do likewise. If you are dealing with unforgiveness in your life, have the courage today to ask the Lord for his guidance and assistance that you may forgive others the way he has forgiven you.

How has the Lord forgiven you? How can you use that same mercy towards others?

Heavenly Father, Give us the courage to forgive the way you forgive us.
