Focus on the Internal

By Fr. Chuck Dornquast
Being a man on the heftier side, I've spent a decent deal of time and energy...

Mark 7: 20

But what comes out of a person, that is what defiles

Being a man on the heftier side, I've spent a decent deal of time and energy contemplating, studying, implementing, abandoning and again re-contemplating diets. Keto, low-carb, atkins, weight watchers etc° I actually find it amazing the amount of time, energy and resources focused on the external. While the effort to be healthy and good stewards of our body-temples is great, what if a person devoted as much attention on their eternal soul? If I eat certain foods, this happens. If I think certain ways, or engage in certain activities, it has effects on my interior life, my inner-peace, joy and faith. St. Ignatius of Loyola is someone who offers a tool to focus on the interior life, called the Discernment of Spirits. Perhaps it can be a tool for becoming attentive to what truly nourishes the internal life and finding that inner-joy which our world hungers for.
