Fanning the Flames of Faith

By Diane Kledzik
Is your heart burning with desire to live and share the Gospel?  Or does the mere mention of faith in public give you heartburn?...

Jesus said to his disciples: “I have come to set the earth on fire,  and how I wish it were already blazing!”

Luke 12:49

Is your heart burning with desire to live and share the Gospel?  Or does the mere mention of faith in public give you heartburn?   Baptism commissions us to live our faith fully in word and deed, to share our faith in Jesus Christ with others and to invite others into that relationship, and to transform the world for Christ.  There will be situations and people and places that will offer us little support in doing this, and yet the call is the same.  To those whom much is given, much is expected and the Church exists to accompany us on our journey of faith through the reception of sacraments and ministries and people to guide us.

Through my grandparents and parents, Godparents, ongoing faith formation, Eucharist and Reconciliation, prayer, works of charity and justice, and participation in intentional small Christian communities, my faith has been fueled and my desire to be accountable to Jesus Christ and the Church has increased. I continue to learn the attitudes and behaviors of a disciple of Christ and have gained confidence in standing up and for my faith. With that, I have also had to make the decision to release my attachment to those things that try to extinguish my flame of faith and separate me from Christ.

What have you had to turn away from to turn towards Jesus Christ?  What fuels the fire of your faith?

Lord Jesus, help us to discern what fuels and what extinguishes our desire to grow in relationship with you and to choose the fuel of Gospel values to ignite our hearts for you.
