Fake News. Alternative Facts. Now that I have your attention….this is not a political rant. However it does speak to us as Christians as to whom we place our trust and information. The truth can be sometimes muddled in translation. Facts can be twisted. Especially today, we have to become educated consumers of the information put forth both from government and from news organizations (or those that claim to be news organizations). No other time in history has there been as much information disseminated as there is today. Most are rumors, gossip, wishes, slants on information, advice, cooking videos, crazy videos, etc. Because the news cycle is what it is today, we are forced to do our due diligence in vetting our information. So how does this relate to today's reading?
Jesus was trying to get his message across in today's reading, but the people didn't want to believe him. He exclaimed that Moses gave you the word and you didn't listen. They put their faith in everything BUT the scriptures. They had the Son of God, their Savior Jesus Christ, in their midst, yet they didn't believe. They analyzed, scrutinized, criticized, but most didn't come to believe. Today, you and I believe, yet we still scrutinize scripture, trying to justify our actions to fit what Jesus was teaching. It doesn't work that way. We must trust in God, not things of this world. Take in the Good News today, not the fake news that the world shoves down our throat.
