Faith as Light

By Joshua Bertrand
My sister lives in Denmark...

Mark 4: 21-23

He said to them, "Is a lamp brought in to be placed under a bushel basket or under a bed, and not to be placed on a lampstand? For there is nothing hidden except to be made visible; nothing is secret except to come to light. Anyone who has ears to hear ought to hear."

My sister lives in Denmark, a place that has a very different environment to what I'm used to being a native son of Florida. Recently, when I had the opportunity to visit her and her family, I was shocked at how little light this small Scandinavian country receives during the winter. However, I noticed that every building that I visited during this land of eternal darkness made use of light in a special and spectacular way that I never really thought of before. A real concern for the Danish is where their light is come from, and how they will use this light, and what are they illuminating. They understand the transforming power of light in a dark place, and the necessity of light to create warmth, to create an environment of security, comfort, and assurance. Faith operates the same way in our lives, it allows us to see the world around us and every relationship in a new way, faith illuminates and transforms us from within. Faith is a lantern that shines in the darkness of our world so we can journey in confidence to our hope which is eternity with the source of all in this world, the beauty of the Most Holy Trinity.
