Eyes of the Heart

By Andrew Zsebedics
I know for a fact that when I was a kid, I was terrified of the dark...

The people walking in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent, but he kept calling out all the more, “Son of David, have pity on me!”

Luke 18:39

I know for a fact that when I was a kid, I was terrified of the dark. Now, as I have gotten much older, I realize why I had such a fear of the dark. It wasn’t that I was afraid of the dark itself, but rather I was afraid of the uncertainty of it. When we don’t have light to see what’s in front of us, we become fearful of what we cannot see.

The blind man in today’s gospel reveals much about how to live life as a disciple of the Lord. There is something that this blind man sees that the crowds, who dismissed him for calling Jesus’ name, can’t see at that moment. How could this man, without sight, see more than anyone else there that day? Simple. The eyes of this man’s heart were wide open. He had the faith in Jesus before being healed and this man deeply desired to see the face of Jesus. Do we? This man, despite his physical blindness, recognized the light, Jesus, in front of him and had the faith to see. Lord, open the eyes of my heart!

Do you faithfully call out to the Lord for help, especially in moments of uncertainty?

Lord, open the eyes of my heart and those I meet this day.
