Eyes of a Child

By John Morris
Each birth of a child has the hand of God...

Luke 1:66

"What, then, will this child be? For surely the hand of the Lord was with him."

The birth of a child is probably the single greatest event in the life of a parent. Each birth brings hope, joy, wonder, happiness and thanksgiving. Looking into the face and eyes of the infant, a parent's wish is that their child has a life better than their own, and most importantly, a life in Christ.

The world we live in is overall good, but our humanness, our sinful ways, have made God's creation not always tolerable. We have to be reminded to turn away from sin and turn our eyes to God, the creator of all good things. That's what John came to do, and today's narrative of his birth addresses this. Each birth of a child has the hand of God upon him or her. The same with us today. We have all been tainted by sin, but have a chance to redeem our sinful natures…at least that is the hope. It's the same hope that we have every Advent, that with each celebration of Christ's birth, that we have a chance to start over and become that same innocent child at our birth. That way when, Jesus says, "let the little children come to me," we can be like children in faith.
