Expectations

By Fr. Chuck Dornquast
When I wake up in the morning, I expect the sun to rise...

Lk. 1:28-29

And coming to her, he said,

"Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you."

But she was greatly troubled at what was said

and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.

When I wake up in the morning, I expect the sun to rise. When I put Popcorn in the microwave, I expect the kernels to Pop. When I spend time with God, do I expect him to respond? Mary wasn't shocked by the presence of an angel. She was troubled by the message the angel gave. She seemingly expected the angel. How extraordinary that in this moment a visit from an Angel seems to Mary to be ordinary. It's as if Mary had been prepared for this encounter or had prior experiences of God making His message known to her. I fear that I would have been overwhelmed simply by the presence of an Angel and not have heard the message! However Mary demonstrates a faith which expects God to reveal Himself. As we adjust to realities beyond our planning, may we imitate Mary's trust in God's care.
