Everyday Shepherds

“Jesus said to [Peter], ‘Feed my sheep.’”

John 21:17

St. John Paul II is the third longest-reigning pope, having reigned for 26-1/2 years until his death on April 2, 2005.  During that time, he served as a true shepherd to the world, traveling to 129 countries, establishing the first-ever World Youth Day (1986), promulgating the Catechism of the Catholic Church (1992), and becoming the first Pontiff to visit a mosque (Damascus, 2001).  Have you ever stopped to thank God for our shepherds, like St. John Paul II, St. John XXIII, Pope Emeritus Benedict and Pope Francis?  Why stop there?

God has gifted each of us with many shepherds, including Bishop Parkes, Bishop Emeritus Lynch and their predecessors.  Let’s not forget our local pastors and their associates, who are dedicated to the spiritual care of all in their parishes.  And there are also the non-ordained, everyday “shepherds,” who have shared the light of faith with us – religious women and men, parents, grandparents, mentors, coaches and teachers.  Their witness has led us to an even closer relationship with the Good Shepherd.

Who are the "everyday shepherds" that God has placed in my path?

Holy Spirit, thank you for inspiring so many to imitate Jesus, our Good Shepherd.
