“Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers and sisters: all good giving and every perfect gift is from above”
James 1:16-17
Have you ever found yourself thinking, “God, why would you tempt me like that?” I know I’ve thought it often. “Why am I struggling with this? Why do I have to fight for this?” Our first reading gives us a great reminder that “God is not subject to temptation to evil, and he himself tempts no one.” It even further explains that temptation is created by our own desire.
That’s why the next paragraph begins with the words “do not be deceived.” It’s easy to get lost in the motions and emotions of life, and to become deceived by the attractive things of this world. In those moments, we must remember that God does not tempt and God does not deceive.
Just because you have a desire doesn’t mean it’s good.
Just because something looks good, also doesn’t mean it’s good.
And if it’s not good, it’s not from God. Because God will not deceive you.
He has given us every perfect gift, and we have the opportunity to choose that over our earthly temptations today.

Lord, we pray to no longer be tempted by our earthly desires. We want the goodness and truth that come only from you.
