Do Good and Avoid Evil

By Chris Pastura
There are areas of our Catholic faith marked by mystery that require lifelong prayer...

Isaiah 1:16-17
"Cease doing evil; learn to do good. Make justice your aim: redress the wronged, hear the orphan's plea, defend the widow."

There are areas of our Catholic faith marked by mystery that require lifelong prayer and reflection to begin to understand. However, the advice in Isaiah's passage cited above is not one of those areas. Rather, it's pretty simple – do good and avoid evil.

Granted, life is messy and every decision isn't so clear; but as people of faith, sometimes we needlessly complicate things. Maybe it's because a little clarity would cause us to stop talking about being better and actually doing it. We all have things in our lives that need to be changed because they're wrong and bad for ourselves and/or others. We also probably know of something we need to do because it's the right thing and we've put it off for too long. Go do it! What are you waiting for?

Lord, help us to change what's wrong in our lives and learn to do good.
