Divine Mercy

By Mark DeSio
n today's responsorial psalm, we pray the words of David after he committed adultery and murder...

Psalm 51:19

A heart contrite and humbled, O God, you will not spurn.

In today's responsorial psalm, we pray the words of David after he committed adultery and murder. Consumed by lust, David committed adultery by having sexual relations with Bathsheba, a beautiful woman who lived nearby. She was married to her husband, Uriah who was away at war. Bathsheba became pregnant with David's child and when the news of her pregnancy reached David, he abused his authority as king and sent Uriah, to the frontlines of battle where he was then killed during combat. Overcome by guilt and sorrow for his iniquities, David turned to the Lord in a spirit of repentance and he begged the Lord for mercy. Despite the gravity of his sins, David trusted that the Lord would not refuse to forgive anyone who is truly contrite. "A heart contrite and humbled, O God, you will not spurn." Jesus himself once told the mystic, Saint Faustina: "The greater the sinner, the greater his right to my mercy." Let us be like David, and trust in the Lord's divine mercy humbling ourselves before him and being washed in the blood and water which flowed from his pierced side as a fountain of mercy for us.
