Detachment

By Elvi J. Moya
In reading this passage from the Gospel we may begin to question the nature of Jesus' words...

Luke 9: 25

What profit is there for one to gain the whole world yet lose or forfeit himself?

In reading this passage from the Gospel we may begin to question the nature of Jesus' words: "Why must I lose my life for Jesus' sake? Didn't he come to die for my sake?" These words spoken by Jesus are indeed extreme if we reflect on them. While some are called to the extraordinary grace of martyrdom, what comes to mind most when reading this passage is something that isn't as explicit as martyrdom, though it remains to be something we rather not speak about, and much less carry out in our lives – detachment. Detachment is a necessary concept to contemplate and practice, especially during the Lenten season. Specifically, detachment from our egos – from the small preferences to the big plans we cling onto – is at the heart of what Jesus is talking about today. The question is this: Can I detach from what I want, from my ego, so as to desire to live solely for and in conformity to the will of my life-giving God? In this regard St. Paul encourages us to, "be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect."
